Robust serial-correlation inference

Residual serial-correlation tests are often derived as though innovations were homoscedastic, weakly dependent on the regressors, and square-integrable. Financial and environmental time series routinely violate those assumptions. These projects use empirical likelihood to retain likelihood-ratio-style calibration while allowing GARCH-type heteroscedasticity, dependence between modeled processes, and, after weighting, innovations with possibly infinite variance.

Serial correlation as a constrained moment problem

An autoregressive model with exogenous variables can be written schematically as

\[ Y_t = \mu+\sum_{j=1}^{p}\phi_jY_{t-j} +\beta^\top X_t+\varepsilon_t. \]

For lags \(1,\ldots,q\), the null hypothesis of no residual serial correlation is encoded by moment restrictions such as

\[ E\{\varepsilon_t(\eta)\varepsilon_{t-k}(\eta)\}=0, \qquad k=1,\ldots,q, \]

where \(\eta=(\mu,\phi,\beta)\) contains nuisance parameters. The challenge is that estimating \(\eta\), allowing conditional heteroscedasticity, and permitting dependence involving the exogenous process all change the covariance structure of these sample moments.

Profile empirical likelihood for the ARX model

Let \(g_t(\eta,\rho)\) collect the estimating equations for the model parameters and the lagged residual products, with \(\rho=(\rho_1,\ldots,\rho_q)\). Empirical likelihood assigns probabilities \(p_t\) to observations and maximizes

\[ R(\eta,\rho) = \max_{\substack{p_t\ge0,\ \sum_tp_t=1\\ \sum_tp_tg_t(\eta,\rho)=0}} \prod_{t=1}^n(np_t). \]

Profiling over \(\eta\) leaves a likelihood-ratio statistic for \(\rho\). The 2022 paper constructs this statistic for autoregressive exogenous models with possible GARCH errors and proves a chi-square limit under conditions that allow heteroscedasticity and correlation between the ARX and exogenous processes. The profile step is essential: plugging in nuisance estimates without accounting for their estimating equations generally gives the wrong calibration.

Weighted empirical likelihood under infinite variance

The later general \(d\)-factor model allows heavier tails. Ordinary residual-product moments may then fail to have finite variance, so the standard quadratic empirical-likelihood expansion is no longer justified. A predictable or data-dependent weight \(w_t\) replaces \(g_t\) by

\[ g_t^{\,w}(\eta,\rho)=w_tg_t(\eta,\rho), \]

with weights chosen to control extreme observations while preserving the null moment restriction. The weighted empirical-likelihood statistic recovers an asymptotic chi-square law under substantially weaker moment assumptions, including settings with possibly infinite innovation variance. The unweighted and weighted procedures therefore address different regimes rather than serving as interchangeable numerical variants.

From asymptotic calibration to diagnostics

The papers establish Wilks-type limits and then examine finite-sample size and power by simulation. Applications to financial and environmental series illustrate why residual dependence, conditional heteroscedasticity, and tail behavior must be diagnosed together. A rejection identifies inadequacy of the serial-correlation restrictions; it does not by itself identify whether the remedy should be additional dynamics, a different volatility model, or a revised exogenous specification.

Background. Empirical likelihood and estimating equations, robust inference, and misspecification and robust covariance.

\[ E\{\varepsilon_t(\eta)\varepsilon_{t-k}(\eta)\}=0, \qquad k=1,\ldots,q, \]

\[ R(\eta,\rho) = \max_{\substack{p_t\ge0,\ \sum_tp_t=1\\ \sum_tp_tg_t(\eta,\rho)=0}} \prod_{t=1}^n(np_t). \]

\[ g_t^{\,w}(\eta,\rho)=w_tg_t(\eta,\rho), \]

\[ Y_t = \mu+\sum_{j=1}^{p}\phi_jY_{t-j} +\beta^\top X_t+\varepsilon_t. \]

\[ E\{\varepsilon_t(\eta)\varepsilon_{t-k}(\eta)\}=0, \qquad k=1,\ldots,q, \]

\[ R(\eta,\rho) = \max_{\substack{p_t\ge0,\ \sum_tp_t=1\\ \sum_tp_tg_t(\eta,\rho)=0}} \prod_{t=1}^n(np_t). \]

\[ g_t^{\,w}(\eta,\rho)=w_tg_t(\eta,\rho), \]
