Posterior compression under predictor redundancy
Bayesian model averaging produces a posterior distribution on model supports. Under predictor redundancy, many supports may encode essentially the same signal. The resulting predictive distribution can be stable even when exact-support probabilities are diffuse and sensitive. This project treats the difficulty as a reporting problem after fitting: replace a long atom-level summary by a small collection of support regions, while measuring exactly what information the report loses.
The reference posterior is not refitted
Let \(\mathcal S\subseteq\{0,1\}^p\) be the support space and let \(P\) denote the fitted marginal posterior on \(\mathcal S\). In a support-indexed regression model,
\[ P(S\mid Y) \propto \pi(S)\int L_S(\vartheta_S;Y)\, \pi_S(\mathrm{d}\vartheta_S). \]
The compression stage does not alter \(\pi(S)\), refit the within-model posterior, or define a new scientific target. It constructs a separate reporting law \(Q\) and compares \(Q\) with the reference law \(P\). This distinction separates posterior reporting from dilution priors, determinantal priors, alternative samplers, and predictive submodel selection.
Support kernels and region components
A support kernel is a bounded function \(\kappa_j:\mathcal S\to[0,1]\). Indicator kernels \(\kappa_j=\mathbf 1_{R_j}\) represent hard regions; nonbinary kernels represent soft metric balls, neighborhoods, modules, intervals, or posterior clusters. Define the retained kernel mass and the normalized region component by
\[ m_j=E_P\{\kappa_j(S)\}, \qquad P_j(\mathrm{d}S)=\frac{\kappa_j(S)}{m_j}\,P(\mathrm{d}S), \qquad m_j>0. \]
Include a fallback component \(\kappa_0\equiv1\), so \(P_0=P\). For mixture weights \(q=(q_0,\ldots,q_J)\) on the simplex, the compressed reporting law is
\[ Q_q=\sum_{j=0}^Jq_jP_j. \]
The fallback weight \(q_0\) has a direct diagnostic meaning. If it remains large, the proposed regions explain only a small part of the reference posterior, even when the numerical distortion of \(Q_q\) is small.
The density ratio makes distortion computable
Because every component is obtained by reweighting \(P\), the density ratio is explicit:
\[ r_q(S)=\frac{\mathrm{d}Q_q}{\mathrm{d}P}(S) = q_0+\sum_{j=1}^Jq_j\frac{\kappa_j(S)}{m_j}. \]
Consequently, the principal support-space discrepancies require expectations under the reference posterior only:
\[ \|Q_q-P\|_{\mathrm{TV}} =\frac12E_P|r_q-1|, \qquad D_{\mathrm{KL}}(Q_q\|P)=E_P(r_q\log r_q), \]
\[ D_{\mathrm{KL}}(P\|Q_q)=-E_P\log r_q \]
whenever the latter is finite. For every bounded posterior functional \(f\),
\[ |E_{Q_q}f-E_Pf| \le 2\|f\|_\infty\|Q_q-P\|_{\mathrm{TV}}. \]
Passing support laws through the model-specific posterior predictive kernel cannot increase total variation. The same diagnostic therefore controls bounded predictive summaries without requiring the regression model to be refitted.
Hard regions reveal the mass-distortion tradeoff
For one hard region \(R\), let \(Q=P(\,\cdot\mid R)\) and \(m=P(R)\). Then
\[ \|Q-P\|_{\mathrm{TV}}=1-m, \qquad D_{\mathrm{KL}}(Q\|P)=-\log m. \]
Thus retained mass is already an exact error diagnostic. Reverse Kullback-Leibler divergence is infinite unless \(P(R)=1\), because a hard truncation assigns zero mass outside \(R\). Soft kernels and the fallback component avoid this singularity while retaining a concise regional description.
Why regions can beat lists of exact supports
Suppose several highly correlated predictors can substitute for one another. The posterior may then place moderate mass on many supports separated by small Hamming or structured distances. An exact-support list spends one reporting unit on every interchangeable atom. A region can encode the common lower-resolution statement, such as “one variable from this wavelength interval” or “this graph neighborhood is involved,” with a single object. Compression is useful only if this reduction in reporting cost is accompanied by small TV and KL distortion and a modest fallback weight.
Region dictionaries and validation
The framework covers fixed hard regions, metric-ball regions, posterior-cluster regions, and pooled-pruned dictionaries. Candidate regions may be learned from posterior draws, so construction and evaluation must be separated. The paper uses split-sample stages for dictionary construction, retained-mass estimation, mixture-weight fitting, and optional final evaluation. The reported diagnostics assess fidelity to the chosen reference posterior; they do not conceal Monte Carlo error or certify that the reference Bayesian model itself is scientifically correct.

\[ P(S\mid Y) \propto \pi(S)\int L_S(\vartheta_S;Y)\, \pi_S(\mathrm{d}\vartheta_S). \]
\[ m_j=E_P\{\kappa_j(S)\}, \qquad P_j(\mathrm{d}S)=\frac{\kappa_j(S)}{m_j}\,P(\mathrm{d}S), \qquad m_j>0. \]
\[ r_q(S)=\frac{\mathrm{d}Q_q}{\mathrm{d}P}(S) = q_0+\sum_{j=1}^Jq_j\frac{\kappa_j(S)}{m_j}. \]
\[ \|Q_q-P\|_{\mathrm{TV}} =\frac12E_P|r_q-1|, \qquad D_{\mathrm{KL}}(Q_q\|P)=E_P(r_q\log r_q), \]
\[ D_{\mathrm{KL}}(P\|Q_q)=-E_P\log r_q \]
lorsque cette dernière quantité est finie. Pour toute fonctionnelle bornée \(f\),
\[ |E_{Q_q}f-E_Pf| \le 2\|f\|_\infty\|Q_q-P\|_{\mathrm{TV}}. \]
Alors
\[ \|Q-P\|_{\mathrm{TV}}=1-m, \qquad D_{\mathrm{KL}}(Q\|P)=-\log m. \]

\[ P(S\mid Y) \propto \pi(S)\int L_S(\vartheta_S;Y)\, \pi_S(\mathrm{d}\vartheta_S). \]
\[ m_j=E_P\{\kappa_j(S)\}, \qquad P_j(\mathrm{d}S)=\frac{\kappa_j(S)}{m_j}\,P(\mathrm{d}S), \qquad m_j>0. \]
\[ r_q(S)=\frac{\mathrm{d}Q_q}{\mathrm{d}P}(S) = q_0+\sum_{j=1}^Jq_j\frac{\kappa_j(S)}{m_j}. \]
\[ \|Q_q-P\|_{\mathrm{TV}} =\frac12E_P|r_q-1|, \qquad D_{\mathrm{KL}}(Q_q\|P)=E_P(r_q\log r_q), \]
\[ D_{\mathrm{KL}}(P\|Q_q)=-E_P\log r_q, \]
\[ |E_{Q_q}f-E_Pf| \le 2\|f\|_\infty\|Q_q-P\|_{\mathrm{TV}}. \]
\[ \|Q-P\|_{\mathrm{TV}}=1-m, \qquad D_{\mathrm{KL}}(Q\|P)=-\log m. \]
