The score representation embeds tangent vectors into the Hilbert space of square-integrable mean-zero random variables. This is the analytic bridge between geometry and likelihood theory.

Score vectors

The coordinate scores form the basic tangent frame.

Definition. For a regular model, the coordinate score functions are \[ s_i(x;\theta)=\partial_i\ell_\theta(x)=\partial_i\log p_\theta(x). \] A tangent vector \(u=u^i\partial_i\) is represented by the random variable \(u^is_i\in L_0^2(P_\theta)\), where \(L_0^2(P_\theta)=\{h:\mathbb E_\theta h=0,\ \mathbb E_\theta h^2<\infty\}\).

Proposition. The map \(u^i\partial_i\mapsto u^is_i\) is linear. It is injective exactly when the Fisher information matrix is positive definite.

Proof. Linearity is immediate. The squared \(L^2(P_\theta)\)-norm of the image is \(u^ig_{ij}u^j\). This vanishes for nonzero \(u\) precisely when the Fisher matrix has a null direction.

Differentiating expectations

Scores describe derivatives of expectations by covariance identities.

Proposition. For a smooth statistic \(h_\theta(x)\), \[ \partial_i\mathbb E_\theta h_\theta =\mathbb E_\theta(\partial_i h_\theta)+\mathbb E_\theta(h_\theta s_i). \]

Proof. Write the expectation as \(\int h_\theta p_\theta\,\mathrm{d}\mu\) and differentiate under the integral: \[ \partial_i\int h_\theta p_\theta\,\mathrm{d}\mu =\int(\partial_i h_\theta)p_\theta\,\mathrm{d}\mu+\int h_\theta(\partial_i p_\theta)\,\mathrm{d}\mu. \] Since \(\partial_i p_\theta=s_ip_\theta\), the identity follows.

Centering and nuisance directions

The tangent-space formalism naturally separates identifiable directions from redundant ones.

Definition. A direction \(u\) is null at \(p_\theta\) if \(u^is_i=0\) in \(L^2(P_\theta)\). Null directions do not change the distribution to first order and should be quotiented out of the tangent space.

Remark. In semiparametric statistics, the same idea becomes projection onto tangent spaces and orthogonal complements, producing efficient scores and information bounds.

Coordinate transformations

Scores transform covariantly, so tangent coordinates and score functions remain consistent under reparametrization.

Proposition. If \(\phi=\phi(\theta)\), then \[ \partial_{\phi^a}\ell=\frac{\partial\theta^i}{\partial\phi^a}\partial_{\theta^i}\ell. \]

Proof. This is the ordinary chain rule applied to \(\ell_{\theta(\phi)}(x)\). It shows that score components transform as a covector frame, while tangent vector components transform contravariantly.

The Hilbert tangent space

At a distribution \(P\), scores belong to \[ L_2^0(P)=\{g\in L_2(P):Pg=0\}, \qquad \langle g,h\rangle_P=P(gh). \] For a model \(\mathcal P\), its tangent set is the collection of scores of quadratic-mean differentiable one-dimensional submodels through \(P\); its tangent space \(\mathcal T_P\) is the closed linear span of that set in \(L_2^0(P)\). Closure is part of the definition because efficient scores are orthogonal projections and therefore require a Hilbert space.

Proposition (chain rule for expectations). If \(t\mapsto P_t\) has score \(g\) at \(0\), and \(f_t\to f_0\) in \(L_2(P)\) with \((f_t-f_0)/t\to\dot f_0\) in \(L_1(P)\), then \[ \left.\frac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}t}P_tf_t\right|_{t=0} =P\dot f_0+P(f_0g). \]

Proof. Put \(r_t=(\sqrt{p_t}-\sqrt p)/t-\tfrac12g\sqrt p\), so \(\|r_t\|_{L_2(\mu)}\to0\). The identity \[ \frac{p_t-p}{t} =\left(\frac{\sqrt{p_t}-\sqrt p}{t}\right)(\sqrt{p_t}+\sqrt p) \] and Cauchy--Schwarz imply \(\int f_0(p_t-p)/t\,\mathrm{d}\mu\to P(f_0g)\). The remaining term \(P_t(f_t-f_0)/t\) tends to \(P\dot f_0\) by the stated integrability and contiguity implied by quadratic-mean differentiability.

Parametric scores and coordinate changes

For a regular chart \(\theta\mapsto P_\theta\), a coordinate velocity \(v\in\mathbb R^d\) represents the score \(v^\top\dot\ell_\theta\). Hence \[ \mathcal T_\theta =\{v^\top\dot\ell_\theta:v\in\mathbb R^d\}, \qquad \langle v,w\rangle_\theta=v^\top I_\theta w. \] Under a smooth coordinate change \(\eta=\psi(\theta)\) with Jacobian \(J=\partial\theta/\partial\eta^\top\), \(\dot\ell_\eta=J^\top\dot\ell_\theta\). The functions representing a geometric tangent vector change, but their \(L_2(P)\) class and inner products do not.

Nuisance directions and efficient scores

Suppose \(\theta=(\psi,\lambda)\), with scalar parameter of interest \(\psi\) and nuisance parameter \(\lambda\). Write the score as \((\ell_\psi,\ell_\lambda^\top)^\top\) and partition Fisher information as \[ I= \begin{pmatrix} I_{\psi\psi}&I_{\psi\lambda}\\ I_{\lambda\psi}&I_{\lambda\lambda} \end{pmatrix}. \] The nuisance tangent space is \(\mathcal T_\lambda=\{a^\top\ell_\lambda:a\in\mathbb R^q\}\).

Theorem (efficient score). If \(I_{\lambda\lambda}\) is nonsingular, the orthogonal residual \[ \ell_\psi^{\mathrm{eff}} =\ell_\psi-I_{\psi\lambda}I_{\lambda\lambda}^{-1}\ell_\lambda \] is orthogonal to every nuisance score, and \[ I_{\psi\psi}^{\mathrm{eff}} =P\{(\ell_\psi^{\mathrm{eff}})^2\} =I_{\psi\psi} -I_{\psi\lambda}I_{\lambda\lambda}^{-1}I_{\lambda\psi}. \]

Proof. For any \(a\), \[ P\!\left[\ell_\psi^{\mathrm{eff}}a^\top\ell_\lambda\right] =I_{\psi\lambda}a -I_{\psi\lambda}I_{\lambda\lambda}^{-1}I_{\lambda\lambda}a=0. \] Thus the subtracted term is precisely the Hilbert projection of \(\ell_\psi\) onto \(\mathcal T_\lambda\). Expanding the squared norm gives the Schur complement formula.

In a semiparametric model, replace the finite span by a closed nuisance tangent space and the matrix regression by the orthogonal projection \(\Pi_{\mathcal T_\lambda}\ell_\psi\). This is the geometric origin of orthogonal scores, influence functions, and efficiency bounds.
