Principal bundles encode geometric objects that are locally trivial but globally twisted. A connection selects horizontal directions in the total space and makes differentiation, parallel transport, and curvature compatible with the symmetry group.

Principal bundles and gauge transformations

Definition. A principal \(G\)-bundle is a manifold \(P\), a free right action \(R_g:P\to P\), and a projection \(\pi:P\to M\) such that each \(x\in M\) has a neighborhood \(U\) with an equivariant diffeomorphism \[ \pi^{-1}(U)\cong U\times G. \] The fibers are \(G\)-torsors: they have no preferred identity but the group acts freely and transitively.

A local section \(s:U\to P\) gives a trivialization by \(p=s(x)g\). On overlaps, sections satisfy \[ s_\beta(x)=s_\alpha(x)g_{\alpha\beta}(x), \] where transition functions obey the cocycle identity \(g_{\alpha\beta}g_{\beta\gamma}=g_{\alpha\gamma}\).

Connection one-forms

Definition. A principal connection is a \(\mathfrak g\)-valued one-form \(\omega\in\Omega^1(P;\mathfrak g)\) satisfying \[ \omega(\xi_P)=\xi,\qquad R_g^*\omega=\operatorname{Ad}_{g^{-1}}\omega. \] Its horizontal subspace is \(H_pP=\ker\omega_p\), complementary to the vertical tangent space.

Pulling back by a local section gives the gauge potential \(A=s^*\omega\in\Omega^1(U;\mathfrak g)\). Under \(s'=sg\), \[ A'=\operatorname{Ad}_{g^{-1}}A+g^{-1}\mathrm{d}g. \] The inhomogeneous term is the same phenomenon as the coordinate transformation of Christoffel symbols.

Curvature

Definition. The curvature two-form is \[ \Omega=\mathrm{d}\omega+\frac12[\omega\wedge\omega]. \] Locally, \[ F_A=\mathrm{d}A+A\wedge A. \]

Theorem (Bianchi identity). \[ \mathrm{d}^\omega\Omega =\mathrm{d}\Omega+[\omega\wedge\Omega]=0. \]

Proof. Substitute \(\Omega=\mathrm{d}\omega+\tfrac12[\omega,\omega]\), use \(\mathrm{d}^2=0\), the graded Leibniz rule, and the Jacobi identity. The two terms involving \([\mathrm{d}\omega,\omega]\) cancel and the triple-bracket term vanishes by Jacobi.

Parallel transport and associated bundles

A curve \(\widetilde\gamma\) in \(P\) is horizontal when \(\omega(\dot{\widetilde\gamma})=0\). Every base curve and starting point have a unique horizontal lift, whose endpoint defines equivariant parallel transport. Given a representation \(\rho:G\to\operatorname{GL}(V)\), the associated vector bundle \[ E=P\times_\rho V \] inherits a covariant derivative \[ \nabla=\mathrm{d}+\rho_*(A) \] in a local gauge. Its curvature is \(\rho_*(F_A)\).

Example (frame bundle). The frame bundle \(FM\) is a principal \(\operatorname{GL}(n)\)-bundle. Linear connections on \(TM\) correspond exactly to principal connections on \(FM\). For a Riemannian manifold, the orthonormal frame bundle reduces the structure group to \(O(n)\); the Levi-Civita connection is an \(O(n)\)-connection.
